Why HVAC Technicians Tell You to Change Your Air Filter

Why HVAC Technicians Tell You to Change Your Air Filter

Changing the air filter of your heating and cooling system can be an easy thing to forget… but once your system suffers a major problem from a dirty air filter, you probably won’t forget to change it again any time soon. Allowing your air filter to become clogged with dust can lead to a number of issues with your HVAC system, and some of those issues can be pricey.

Here are 5 good reasons why you should never forget to change your air filter.

1. Your Home Won’t Cool Down or Heat up as Quickly

Your heating and air conditioning (HVAC) system requires a certain amount of air to flow through it in order to perform heating and cooling processes efficiently. When your air filter is clogged with dust, it will restrict the amount of airflow that’s going into your HVAC system through your home’s return vent. This lack of adequate airflow will force your system to work harder and longer to achieve your desired temperature.

2. You’ll Have Higher Heating & Cooling Bills

A clogged air filter makes your HVAC system run less efficiently. This means that your system is forced to work harder to provide the same level of heating or cooling that it was providing before. This results in higher energy costs that you’re most likely to notice during summer and winter (when your HVAC system is getting the most use).

3. You’ll Get Worse Indoor Air Quality

The air filter’s main function is to keep dust and other particles out of your HVAC system. However, when your air filter has a thick coat of dust, some of that dust is going to travel through your HVAC system, where it will then be dispersed via your ductwork into every room in your home.

4. Part of Your Air Conditioner Will Freeze

Forgetting to change your air filter during summer can result in ice forming on your evaporator coil. Normally, your evaporator has enough airflow moving through its coils to dissipate the condensation that forms on them. Without enough airflow, condensation will freeze on the coils. This, in turn, will disrupt the cooling process and can even cause your system to fail.

5. Your System Might Break Down

Aside from frozen coils causing a system breakdown, a clogged air filter can also cause your blower motor to overheat and even fail entirely. Without a functioning blower, your HVAC system is basically useless. Unfortunately, the repair can cost anywhere from several hundred to over a thousand dollars, depending on factors such as the blower’s motor type, motor brand, speed, power usage, and torque.

In short, changing your air filter (or cleaning it, depending on what type it is) is easy and inexpensive. Not changing your air filter can end up being very expensive.
